Native Language Phobia

In response to our earlier report at Trisha’s inability to speak in her mother-tongue, she had asked her Family Physician to comment on her position. When Trisha’s family Physician (name withheld) called us, we thought someone was making a prank call. We didn’t want to be on the receiving end of a “Howard Sterned Phone Call”. In fact it turned out to be real in the end. Her Physician explained that Trisha is suffering from a peculiar syndrome called “Native Language Phobia” or NLP. Whatever that is…it prevents her from speaking in her native language in public.

We then asked her Physician, if this is a rare disorder or specific to certain geographies (especially to Commonwealth Countries)? The Physician clarified that a large number of cases have been reported in Chennai and especially among the *so-called* educated elite. He said that people affected with NLP find it hard to communicate with the common man in a language that is common to both the parties. He noticed higher incidence especially among girls in younger age-group.

We were curious if this would prevent Trisha from acting in Tamil Films. The Physician responded with a laughter and asked which Tamil movie expects its heroine to deliver a full length Tamil dialog? He added that it would be a different case, something similar to social stigma, had one suffered from English Language Phobia (ELP). For economic reasons, it wouldn’t have been feasible to suffer from ELP. Even the common man does his best to respond to a question in English.

After our call, we checked with veteran Perumal Kovil Begger, “white rice” Ramasamy on his views. Ramasamy was in an inebriated mood and responded “Ei…what are you doing here? I no drink. Drink only little. Come tomorrow”. We later understood that Ramasamy was carried away by Actor Vijay’s English dialog in the movie “Villu”.

[Hush hush] On hearing our earlier report, Tamil afficianado and Director, Thangar Bachchan, offered a meaty role for Trisha as a village girl in his upcoming venture. He swears by his late great grandmother that he will ensure that Trisha speaks a complete sentence in Tamil. We have to wait and see if Trisha accepts such a challenging role.
