Adios Facebook

I had few accounts with FB. Some opened a long time ago and were seldom used and I had recently signed up with FB using my professional contact e-mail under the compulsion of one of my good old schoolmate.

I decided to pull the plug off from the social networking sites as I am growing increasingly skeptical about the whole concept. I am not naive to believe that it helps people to stay in touch. More than that the industry runs on data mining the shared content and a huge marketing analysis follows suit to harness the pulse of what’s hot and happening now. I wish someday it addresses the real issues of the society and helps in the betterment. It can happen through meaningful participation and will evolve over time.

The whole thing gets to go out of hand if you tend to get sucked in to the social network sharing frenzy! For more opinionated posts, i think individual blog sites are the best and for more crisp versions, Twitter would be the ideal choice considering its reach. When you begin to have a huge following base, you tend to become a bit watchful of your posts (at least in your subconscious you tend to prefer a stronger and more opinionated version) as to not upset sections of your readers. In the case of social networks, you should be very careful in not mixing your professional and personal network. It is also quite ironic that recruiting agencies rely on your social network data to tap in to your *alleged* alter-ego. I have noticed a tendency among people from community centric societies to share more with their circle while those from individual centric societies are a bit more cautious in sharing their information and largely remain cynical. To me it sounds like irony as the social networking sites have been built by individual centric folks for largely community centric population. Some form of expression of individualism within the community centric framework! (Laugh out loud)

I still prefer the good old way of connecting with near and dear. Drop by over a cup of tea and have a warm chat or host one. I also think it is time for me to keep aside the logic and stick to the five senses that actually fills our beautiful childhood (as I learn it from my son).
