As the cloud of bankruptcy loomed large over the General Motors (GM) Headquarters, Fritz Henderson, the CEO of GM, received a surprise phone call. Guess who was the Caller? It was Fidel Castro, making a call to lend a helping hand to Fritz Henderson. Fritz Henderson was completely taken by surprise that he wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a prank call from Howard Stern or any other Canadian Radio Jockeys. So, Fritz, in his presence of mind, asked for the Capital of Cuba and Fidel was prompt to reply “Guantanamo”. The worldy sage he is, Fritz, immediately realized that it could be none other than Fidel and promptly addressed Fidel as Commandante.
Fidel: We would like to extend our assistance in keeping your company afloat.
Fritz: Mucho Gracias, Commandante. But why us?
Fidel: As you might know, we have the largest collection of vintage GM vehicles in running condition than you will notice anywhere else in the world.
Fritz: But how can I help you?
Fidel: We need your help, Pal! After the US trade embargo, we have been dealt with grey market parts and many of our vintage GMs are in dilapidated condition. Although our mechanics do their best to keep them alive and running as Taxis.
Fritz: But I don’t see a market viability unless otherwise you open up a Democratic process in your country. No disrespect Commandante.
Fidel: Look Fritz, we are not on a debating table. Here is my offer, take it or leave it. GM has a healthy history of producing muscle cars and gas-guzzlers. And we have a lot of your Stepsides, Eldorados, Montclairs, Bel Airs and Impalas. Tell me where can your designers get back to the luxury of fins and excessive Chrome design? Even Comrade Chavez is willing to supply gasoline at a subsidized price. Something that your Capitalist Government won’t do.
Fritz: So, what is the deal?
Fidel: Me and my brother will have a controlling stake in your Company. Your Company can relocate to our place were land will be leased and skilled labour will be offered at Socialist rate. We can sign off by starting a maintenance program to the existing ones and follow up with a new ones.
Fritz: (reluctantly mulls over it). I will touch base with you Commandante.
Fidel: I hope to hear a positive reply.
(phone hangs up)
…
(phone rings)
Fritz: Yes.
Personal Assistant to Fritz: Mr. Henderson, the White House is on line…
Fritz: (looking mentally drained out) Yes, please. Connect the call.
